Executive Director's Message

Pearl Dudek's
Story
Born on January 15, 1920 in Caliento, Manitoba, Pearl Dudek grew up on a small family farm. Life was difficult on the farm during the Great Depression (1929–1939) and Pearl's family worked extremely hard in harsh conditions. As a young girl she helped take the rocks off the field so they would not break her Father's plow.

Pearl attended Primary School in a one-room house 3km away from her own. She walked 6km a day and was an excellent student. She was often asked by her teacher to help out children older than herself with their school work. Despite wanting to go further with her education by attending Secondary School, none was available in her area. Her family could not afford the long distance travel to another district so Pearl never attended secondary school.

Pearl moved to the provincial capital (Winnipeg) for work at age 18 in order to support the family. In Winnipeg she met and married the love of her life, Tony, in 1943. Together they raised a family of three children. Pearl always placed her family first, ahead of herself and her work. She was a brilliant gardener, read voraciously and greatly enjoyed learning by traveling to new places.

Unable to pursue her education as a child, Pearl became a passionate advocate for children's education. She ensured her own children and grandchildren were provided every opportunity possible, and her family thrived. Pearl Dudek passed away on April 22 2008 at age 88, having left a profound legacy impacting not just her family but her whole community. Pearl Dudek International Academy continues her legacy, and is inspired by her passionate belief in the lifelong importance of education.
